Electronic Safety Case

Matrix is the market leader in electronic safety cases and has delivered over 20 to the global Oil and Gas Industry. Our approach is ground breaking and one that focuses on the needs of everyone working, on and associated with, the facilities concerned e.g. an offshore production platform and not just those of safety specialists. This starts with presenting key information in the way users want to find it i.e. by area or system. Having chosen either of these routes, users are presented with 'must know' safety information. For example, what the major hazards are, where they are, what controls are in place and what they can or cannot do during normal operations. Users are also able to browse and access all manner of current safety related and technical information including drawings, specifications and procedures etc.

What's different about our approach?

The traditional way of presenting a written safety case is restricted to text, drawings and illustrations. Matrix's electronic safety case is completely different and uses full multimedia including intelligent drawings, dynamic and narrated images, animations and videos plus links to the latest drawings and documents - all are available at the user's fingertips.

How does it improve safety?

Many of the major accidents that have occurred in the last 10 years were addressed in the safety cases for the facilities concerned. Unfortunately, accident investigations have shown that they were not properly communicated or understood prior to the accident. Therefore, greater clarity, understanding and a better retention of safety information is required.

For example:

If 100 people read the same book and were asked to describe the leading character, they would all have a different picture in their minds of what he looked like. If they had been shown a picture of the leading character beforehand and of the surroundings where the events took place, they would all have known what he/she looked like and the context in which events occurred.

A safety case is no different. Information presented visually is clearer and easier to understand and is more interesting and ultimately more memorable. A good safety performance requires both management and the workforce to understand the hazards, controls and limitations involved. Greater clarity and understanding, and a better level of retention of safety information, will lead to improved safety.
